Chinmaya bags double; Mamata subdues Diya

State’s top lefthander Chinmaya Somaiya was in devastating form as he overpowered Deepit Patil from Thane in an action-packed men’s singles final, which went to the wire  before Chinmaya triumphed 4-3 of the JVPG-3rd Maharashtra State Ranking Table Tennis Tournament at their premises here today.

Buoyed  by his splendid form,  later he outhit Reagan Albuquerque 4-3 in another youth boys fast-paced thriller to end with a double crown.  Chinmaya, both against Deepit and Reagan,  was faster and speedy and his ability to switch directions,  of his strokes time and again  floored his rivals. And he is also top seeded and favourite in the junior boys singles, which gets underway later tonight.

Another junior Diya Chitale, who too, like Chinmaya dominated the women’s and youth girls singles (upto semi finals stage). However, in the end, she  had to settle for the youth girls trophy,  as she thrashed Pune’s Pritha Vartikar  11-5, 11-6, 11-5, 11-4. But in the women’s final, the  title eluded her as her rival from the Bank of Baroda and former international Mamata Prabhu,  used all her experience and guile to subdue her by countering Diya’s aggression by intelligently  changing  pace and direction to win the next four games. But Diya  too is top seeded and will have another crack in the junior girls singles event.
