Chimbai SC scored late in the second half to come out trumps defeating Sea View SC 1-0 in the final of the SPYC (St. Peter’s Youth Centre) conducted inaugural late Gilbert Pereira Instant Hockey Tournament, played at the Fr Donnelly Gym St. Stanislaus High School Ground, Bandra.
Both the teams fought tooth and nail to get the upper hand, but Chimbai managed to score the lone crucial goal through Gershwin Pereira in the dying minutes of the match and emerge champions.
Earlier in the semi-final matches, Chimbai defeated Bandra United SC 2-1. Chimbai’s star forward Jayesh Jadhav scored both the goals and Rajat Sharma got the lone goal for Bandra United.
In the other semi-final, Sea View beat Somlands SC 3-2. The goal scorer for Sea View was two goals by Gavin Vandrine and one by Chris Vankanlinburg. Venkatesh Devkar and Shelton Carvalho scoring a goal each for Somlands.
Jayesh Jadhav emerged as the top goal scorer and was also named at the ‘Player-of-the-tournament’. Suraj S. of Chimbai was declared as the ‘Player of the final and Sean Coutinho of Somlands was adjudged as the best goalkeeper.
The champions Chimbai SC and the runners-up Sea View received their prizes from Chief Guest, Dr Arlene Ghosh, daughter of late Gilbert Pereira and Guest Of Honour, Olympian & Padma Shree Dhanraj Pillay.
