Sports For All 2016 entered into its 15th day with players in volleyball, chess and new-age sports like MMA calling the shots at the DY Patil Stadium, here on Monday.
In the girls’ Under-14 volleyball category, an interesting battle was on the cards between two of the pre-tournament favorites Children’s Academy, Thakur Complex kandivali and Holy Cross Convent, Thane. It was a battle of wits and determination between the two, with Children’s Academy holding on to their nerves and run away with the championship by winning the match 25-23, 25-9 & 25-19. In the third-place play-off match, Children’s Academy, Malad beat Amrita Vidyalayam 25-21, 25-10 to secure the bronze medal.
It was also the opening day of Mixed Martial Art competition, with Vaibhav Shyamala of M S International School running away with the top prize in the Under 17 -61 kgs weight category, while Santosh Bag of Guru Harkishan High School won gold in the -56 kgs category. Karan Thanvi of R K Memorial High School (Bhayendar) took the gold in -77 kgs classification. In the boys’ Under-15 category, Hardik Sharma of Parle Tilak Vidyalaya English Medium School won the gold in -58 kgs weight category, while Al Nadi Ul Falah English School annexed the gold in -53 kgs age category. In girls’ Under 15, open weight category, Lubna Khan of Assadullah Khan English High School & Junior College won the gold in the open weight category, while her school-mate ran away with the top honours in the +58 kgs age group.
In Under-13 girls’ chess event, Hetvi Pethad of Nalanda Public School won the gold, while Aditi Chachad of Ryan International School (Nerul) and Khushi Choudki of Bal Bharti Public School took the silver and bronze respectively.
Under-15 badminton championships saw the young shuttlers battle it out to qualify for the finals of the boys’ Under-15 and girls Under 17 & Under 15 category. In the boys’ category, Aditya Desai of Utpal Sanghvi Global School pulled off a stunning 20-22, 21-15 & 21-14 victory over the top seeded Aavishkar Pawar of Apeejay School, Nerul to set up a title clash with second seeded Vaibhav Tewari of Reliance Foundation School ( Koparkhairane) who beat Vishwam Devang of Ryan International School (Nerul) 21-7, 21-10.
In girls’ Under-15, Juhi Rohra of Lilavatibai Podar High School beat Vaidehi Mohite of Children’s Academy, Malad 21-14,21-17 to qualify for the finals. In another semifinal match, Urvi Thakurdesai of Euro School, Thane beat Ritika Raj of Apeejay School, Nerul 21-18,17-21, 21-11 to cruise into the finals. In the Under-17, girls’ category, top seeded Divya Hedge of Lilavatibai Podar High School beat Shruti Patade of Peoples Education Society English Medium School 21-18, 21-12 to enter the finals, while third seeded Samiaa Anish of Fazlani L’Academie Globale beat Anushka Patil of Bal Bharti Public School (Kharghar) 21-9, 21-5 to cruise into the finals
