Anusha Gaonkar & Utkkarsh Mehta bag 6 Gold medals each at JVPG Open Swimming


Anusha Gaonkar from Chhatrapati Shivaji Mahararaj Smarak Samiti( CSMSS) , Vile Parle and Utkkarsh Mehta from Juhu Vile Parle Gymkhana Club( JVPG) won six gold medals each in the Girls U-14 and Boys U- 14 events respectively, at the 2nd JVPG Open Swimming Championship, which concluded today. Following Anusha and Utkkarsh, were little Anaahi Jain( Wadala Swimming Pool) and Shivaansh Athalye( CSMSS) , who bagged 5 Gold medals each in Girls and Boys U-10 events respectively.

Mazgaon Dock Triumphs Over Canara Bank, GIC RE Dominates Insurance Oriental in Oriental T20 Tournament


Mazgaon Dock’s  Mayur Gharat put up a solid all-round performance to register a comprehensive victory against Canara Bank in the Insurance Oriental T20 cricket tournament played at cross maidan.

Batting first, Mazgaon Dock found themselves in a tricky position as Canara Bank’s disciplined bowling attack kept things tight. However, Gharat and Santosh Pawaskar steadied the innings with valuable contributions. Both batters top-scored with 28 runs each, ensuring that their team posted a respectable total. Their efforts were crucial in providing stability, especially when early wickets threatened to derail the innings.

In response, Canara Bank’s chase never gained momentum, as Mayur Gharat turned the match on its head with an exceptional bowling performance. He picked up 4 wickets for just 28 runs, dismantling the batting lineup and ensuring his team stayed in command throughout, supporting him brilliantly was Mehul Parmar, who returned with impressive figures of 3 for 11 in just 3.2 overs. His tight bowling ensured that Canara Bank never got a foothold in the game, and eventually crumbled under pressure.

In the second match of the day, GIC RE registered a crushing 10-wicket win over Insurance Oriental, showcasing dominance in both batting and bowling.

Insurance Oriental struggled to build partnerships and were bowled out for 112 in just 15 overs. Their innings was largely reliant on a lone warrior, Vansh Devendra, who played a fighting knock of 72 runs. While other batters fell cheaply, Devendra held his ground and played some exquisite shots to keep his team in the contest. However, his effort was in vain as GIC RE’s bowlers were relentless. Hamza Shaikh was instrumental in breaking the backbone of IO’s batting lineup, returning with figures of 3 for 25. Alongside him, Kiran Datta produced a disciplined spell, scalping 3 wickets for just 15 runs. Their combined efforts ensured that Insurance Oriental never gained any momentum, and the innings folded much earlier than expected.

Chasing 113 for victory, GIC RE’s openers made light work of the target. Sankar Panshkar played a composed knock of 47*, anchoring the innings effectively. Meanwhile, Yug Vagheda was in scintillating form, smashing an unbeaten 63 to seal the match in emphatic fashion.


IMPTTA to introduce new model for the new season


The Indo Master Players’ Table Tennis Association ( IMPTTA) will be introducing a new model for the new season, beginning from April 2025. Speaking about the new change, IMPTTA Hon. Secretary Mr. Sameer Bhate while speaking to Magzmumbai, has stated that the existing system of playing under different age categories( 40+ and above)  will be replaced by introduction of ‘Level of players’in four different sections.

The players will be categorised in four different levels in Individual Singles event, according to their performance during the past season. This will produce good competition in all the groups and would also invite new players to participate in the IMPTTA State Ranking TT tournaments.

What happens, if a player opts on his own, for a particular level ? Clarifying this doubt, Mr. Bhate said, “ Player can opt for his level; but the final decision will be with the Core Tournament Committee to decide that particular player’s level. If a player is unable to maintain his position in first 16 in his level, he will be demoted to the next lower level. While the best performers in lower group will be promoted to the upper level.”  

When asked, if the same categorisation will apply to the team event, he said, “ For team event, we will have three levels, immaterial of player’s age. We will decide a particular team’s level, after receipt of entries with the names of the players playing for that team.”

But, What happens in case of Women players? While explaining this , Mr. Bhate said, “There will be only two levels in Women’s event. However, the women players who wish to play in the Men’s team event, will not be allowed to play in the Women’s team event. We want good competition and therefore trying this new experiment. We will also be offering good cash prizes. I am sure, our enthusiastic TT players would welcome this change. Suggestions from our registered players are always welcome. ”    


Former Mumbai Cricket legend Milind Rege passes away


Renowned cricket personality Milind Rege passed away today, after suffering heart attack. He was 76. An all rounder, Milind played for Mumbai team from 1966 to 1978. He also captained Mumbai Cricket team. Milind played 52 first class matches and took 126 wickets at an average of 29.23 and scored 1532 runs at an average of 23.56. Milind suffered first heart attack at the age of 26, but he returned to play after taking a break for one year.  He was an off spinner and a very good middle order batsman, having helped Mumbai team win some important matches at crucial stage.

Milind was a close friend of legendary Sunil Gavaskar and before playing active cricket, both of them also represented their school St.Xavier’s High School, in Table tennis at the inter school meets. Later, in School’s cricket, Milind  captained St. Xavier’s School. He always remained in close touch with his school and college friends till recent times. Recalling his good old school days, his friend Jayant Rane , who kept the wickets for St. Xavier’s School team said, “ Milind was a fantastic all rounder. While bowling, he used to signal to me that the next ball would be a late cutter and that really puzzled the batsman.”

Milind also played and captained Tata Sports Club and served as Sectretary of Tata Sports Club for two decades. He served as Selector and Administrator of MCA and also served as Chairman of Selectors of MCA. Milind was not keeping well recently. His close friend Sunil Gavaskar met him two days ago, in hospital , before he left for Champions trophy assignment as a commentator. Master blaster Sachin Tendulkar also paid his tributes to late Milind Sir, calling him a true Mumbai cricketer with immense contributions to the city’s cricket.

Islam Gymkhana Triumphs Over Muslim United in a High-Scoring Encounter


Islam Gymkhana registered a commanding 24-run victory over Muslim United and secured a spot in the semi-finals of the 75th Salar Jung T20 Cricket Tournament, played at Islam Gymkhana.

Muslim United won the toss and opted to field first, a decision that did not go in their favor as Islam Gymkhana posted a formidable total of 221/4 in 20 overs.

Pranav Shetty and Sufiyan Shaikh laid a strong foundation for Islam Gymkhana, scoring 43 (28) and 38 (32) respectively. However, the standout performer was Ayaz Khan, who remained unbeaten with a blazing 65 off just 32 balls, smashing 8 fours and 3 sixes. Sujit Nayak (13 off 7) and Vinayak Ghotre (23 off 24) provided useful contributions towards the end. Among the bowlers for Muslim United, Deepak Shetty (1/31), Dhruvil Matkar (1/28), and Saud Mansoori (1/37) managed to pick up wickets but struggled to contain the scoring rate.

Chasing 221, Muslim United lost an early wicket but found rhythm from Rohan Bhatkar, who knocked 46 runs off 50 balls. Moin Khan also impressed with a counter-attacking 66 off 39 deliveries, hitting 9 fours and 6 sixes. Despite their efforts, the middle and lower order crumbled under pressure, with wickets falling at regular intervals. Muslim United was eventually bowled out for 197 in 19.4 overs.

For Islam Gymkhana, Siddharth Raut (3/32) and Sarfaraz Patil (3/32) were the pick of the bowlers, while Hitesh Kadam (1/34) and Sujit Nayak (1/23) provided crucial breakthroughs.

Maharashtra  Masters State Badminton Selection Tournament 2024-25 Kicks Off in Mumbai


The Greater Mumbai Badminton Association (GMBA), in collaboration with the Cricket Club of India (CCI), is set to host the CCI-Yonex Sunrise Maharashtra State Masters Badminton Selection Tournament 2024-25 from February 20 to 23, 2025. This highly anticipated event will take place at CCI, Mumbai, and will witness over 400 veteran badminton players from across Maharashtra competing for a chance to represent the state at the Masters National Championship in Goa, scheduled for March 2025.

This prestigious tournament is open to players aged 35 to 75+ years, all registered under the Maharashtra Badminton Association (MBA). The competition will feature intense matches in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles categories, with top performers earning selection for the national championship.

Organized under the auspices of the Maharashtra Badminton Association, the tournament follows a structured point-based selection system to determine Maharashtra’s national representatives. Points will be awarded based on players’ performance in both the State Selection Tournament and the State Masters Championship, ensuring a fair and competitive selection process.

The event is made possible with the support of Cricket Club of India, Yonex Sunrise India, and Bombay Gymkhana.

India First Life Insurance and Larsen and Toubro (L&T) register comfortable wins


India First Insurance defeated Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) by 21 runs while L&T beat Mazgaon Dock by 9 wickets in their respective A Division first round match in the 14th Insurance Oriental Plate shield T20 cricket tournament played at Cross Maidan on Friday.

Opener Prem Mehta fine half century knock of 53 runs (45-balls 2×4,2×6) and useful contributions from Dattaram Hindalkar 17 runs, Ankit Shastri 11 runs Sanket Teli 11 Helped India First pile up a total of 139 for 9 wickets from their 20 overs. BMC’s Santosh Gajre 3/30 was the lone successful bowler. In reply, India First restricted BMC to 118 all out in 18.4 overs. All rounder Jitesh Purabiya top-scored with 34 runs, while India First right arm medium pacer Sandeep Shetty 4/31 picked the wickets. 

Batting first Mazgaon Dockyard Managed a substantial total of 139 for 8 wickets from their 20 overs. Faizan Welder 39 runs and Amol Panchal 24 runs lifted their innings. Rahul Joshi And Jay Shah picked two wickets each for L&T. Later, Jayesh Patil 53 runs not out, Kunal Salvi 40 and Akash Palande 37 not out proved to be decisive for L&T victory. Santosh Pawaskar picked up the sole wicket 1/30.
