HCG Manavata Cancer Centre Achieves Milestone With 3 Simultaneous Successful Stem Cell Transplants

In a ground-breaking medical success, HCG Manavata Cancer Centre (HCGMCC) marked a significant milestone by successfully performing three complex stem cell transplants simultaneously. For the first time, three patients, a female aged 52 years and two males aged 37 and 33 years were admitted on October 28, 2024, and discharged together on December 1, 2024, all with smiles on their faces. The first female patient, diagnosed with multiple myeloma and chronic kidney disease, underwent a critical autologous stem cell transplant. The Second patient diagnosed with relapsed/refractory Hodgkin Lymphoma underwent successful autologous Stem Cell Transplant and the third patient, battling high-risk leukaemia, underwent a complex half-match allogeneic transplant.

Dr Priyatesh Dwivedi

The transplant for all three patients was successfully conducted by Dr Priyatesh Dwivedi, Hemato-oncology and BMT Specialist, along with his dedicated team. This accomplishment adds another milestone for HCG Manavata Cancer Centre, which now boasts a remarkable record of 26 successful transplants within just 24 months.

“An autologous stem cell transplant involves harvesting a patient’s own stem cells and re-infusing them after intensive chemotherapy or radiation. For our first patient, this procedure was particularly complex due to significantly elevated creatinine levels, increasing the risk of acute kidney injury. However, with meticulous planning and the application of Modified Protocols, we successfully overcame these challenges, achieving a positive outcome,” says Dr Priyatesh Dwivedi.

The second transplant was complicated because of poor stem cell yield after the first stem cell harvest. Typically, at least two million stem cells are required for stem cell transplant but, only 0.86 million stem cells could be harvested. After the first stem cell collection, predicting poor stem cell yield during the second stem cell harvest, Dr Priyatesh Dwivedi used a novel modified chemo mobilisation procedure instead of going for a second stem cell harvest. With this chemo mobilisation procedure, adequate stem cell were harvested and successful transplant was done.

“Our second patient, a relapsed or refractory lymphoma case with chronic hepatitis B, encountered significant challenges during the initial stem cell mobilization, which failed to yield sufficient Stem cells for transplantation. Through a specialized chemo-mobilization procedure, we successfully collected the adequate stem cells. Similarly, the third patient presented a high-risk leukaemia case with heightened dangers of graft rejection and graft-versus-host disease and underwent successful half match transplant. Despite these complexities, we successfully performed these transplants with the team’s expertise and determination,” adds Dr Dwivedi.

“The achievement reflects our commitment to providing advanced medical care with precision and compassion. Successfully completing three transplants, including a critical half-match procedure, is a testament to the skill and dedication of our multidisciplinary team,” concludes Dr Raj Nagarkar, MD & Chief of Surgical Oncology & Robotic Services, HCG Manavata Cancer Centre (HCGMCC).

HCG Manavata Cancer Centre Launches ‘Pink Mela’ For Breast Cancer Awareness

Nashik’s leading cancerspeciality hospital – HCG Manavata Cancer Centre (HCGMCC) is hosting a special event titled ‘Pink Mela’ as part of its Breast Cancer Awareness Month initiatives at the hospital on 26th October 2024. Aimed at raising awareness about the increasing cases of breast cancer, the event offers free consultations along with live demonstration for women above the age of 20 years. A dedicated team of doctors will be available to review medical histories, including any breast cancer or other relevant conditions, and conduct physical examinations, if necessary. In addition, the hospital is offering mammography tests at a reduced fee of Rs.550/- as against the regular fee of Rs.7150/- for the month.

“Breast cancer accounts for nearly 30 percent of all cancers among women in India, making it the most common cancer affecting women in the country. The risk of breast cancer increases with age, particularly for women in their 50s and 60s. Unfortunately, most cases are detected at a later stage due to a lack of awareness and early screening programs. With Pink Mela, we aim to raise awareness about breast cancer and educate women on the preventive measures they can take to reduce the risk. Pink Mela attendees are three times more likely to schedule their regular check-ups. I encourage as many women as possible to attend,” says Dr Raj Nagarkar, MD & Chief of Surgical Oncology & Robotic Services, HCGMCC.

Breast cancer is a disease that begins in the cells of the breast, where they grow and multiply uncontrollably, forming a mass or lump. While breast cancer primarily affects women, men can also develop it. Recently, Dr Raj Nagarkar achieved a milestone in breast cancer surgery by performing the world’s first robotic-assisted nipple-sparing mastectomy (RNSM).

“Several factors, including late pregnancies, family history, hormonal changes and lifestyle habits like smoking and high stress, can increase the risk of developing breast cancer. With its growing prevalence, it’s essential to promote awareness and regular screenings to combat this health crisis. Early detection increases the chances of survival by 80 per cent. The Pink Mela aims to empower women through preventive care and routine check-ups, particularly for those at higher risk,” concludes Dr Nagarkar.

Indian Doctor Participates In Jordan’s 1st Ever Robotic Radical Hysterectomies

India’s leading oncologist – Dr Raj Nagarkar contributed to a historic milestone in Jordan’s medical advancement by playing a pivotal role in the country’s first-ever successful robotic radical hysterectomies. The ground-breaking surgeries were performed at the King Hussein Cancer Center (KHCC) in the capital, Amman. The complex procedures, led by KHCC’s Dr Qais Shatnawi, were performed on two women patients aged 40 and 42 years, who were diagnosed with endometrial cancer. Dr Nagarkar from HCG Manavata Cancer Centre (HCGMCC), Nashik assisted Dr Shatnawi in this landmark surgery, marking a first in Jordan’s history. As one of India’s foremost robotic-assisted cancer surgeons, Dr Raj Nagarkar was invited to KHCC to lend support and expertize for ensuring the surgery’s successful execution.

Endometrial cancer is a type of cancer that develops in the lining of the uterus, called the endometrium. It arises from abnormal cell growth, which can potentially spread to other parts of the body.

“Assisting in Jordan’s first robotic radical hysterectomies at KHCC was an incredibly inspiring experience. The success of these surgeries is expected to open new avenues for the adoption of advanced robotic techniques in Jordan, particularly in the field of oncology. Also, the achievement highlights the power of collaboration and innovation in advancing healthcare. I am grateful to Dr Mahmoud Al Masri for his visionary leadership and Dr Qais Shatnawi for sharing his insights and skills during the surgeries,” says Dr Raj Nagarkar, MD & Chief of Surgical Oncology & Robotic Services, HCG Manavata Cancer Centre (HCGMCC).

KHCC, renowned for its commitment to excellence in cancer care, now joins a select group of institutions worldwide capable of performing such advanced robotic surgeries. The entire KHCC team played a crucial role in this success, demonstrating outstanding dedication and skill.

“Dr Raj Nagarkar is a pioneer in robotic surgery, and we are grateful for his invaluable contribution in performing Jordan’s first robotic radical hysterectomies. As Jordan continues to invest in advanced medical technologies, the future looks promising for patients seeking cutting-edge treatment options,” adds Dr Mahmoud Al Masri, Chairman, Department of Surgery, KHCC.

A radical hysterectomy is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of the uterus, cervix, both ovaries, both fallopian tubes and surrounding tissue to treat endometrial cancer. This procedure is also used to address other gynaecological cancers, such as cervical and ovarian cancer. The surgeries performed at KHCC represent a major leap forward in the field of minimally invasive cancer treatment, offering enhanced precision, reduced recovery times and better outcomes for patients.

“This is just the beginning. The successful execution of the surgeries is a testament to the potential of robotics in revolutionizing cancer treatment globally. I look forward to further collaborations that push the boundaries of what we can achieve in medicine,” concludes Dr Nagarkar.

North Maharashtra’s 1st Successful Half-Match Stem Cell Transplant Gives New Life To 9-yesr old Tanzanian Girl

In a ground-breaking medical achievement,HCG Manavata Cancer Centre (HCGMCC) successfully performed North Maharashtra’s first T-Cell Replete Haploidentical (Half-Match) Stem Cell Transplant. The complex procedure, led by Dr Priyatesh Dwivedi, was conducted on 9-year-old girl from Tanzania, who had been battling sickle cell anaemia since she was just six months old. Despite visiting several hospitals, the girl’s family was repeatedly turned away due to the high risks associated with Haploidentical (Half-Match) Stem Cell Transplants, particularly the significant danger of graft rejection and primary graft failure. However, their search for hope ended at HCGMCC, where Dr Priyatesh Dwivedi, backed by an experienced Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) team, successfully carried out the procedure without complications.

A haploidentical or half-match stem cell transplant involves using stem cells from a donor who is a partial genetic match to the patient, usually a first-degree relative such as a parent, sibling or child. For the 9 year-old girl, the donor was her own brother.

“Performing North Maharashtra’s first successful half-match stem cell transplant not only brings hope to families battling serious genetic disorders like sickle cell anaemia but also solidifies HCGMCC’s position as a leader in innovative and high-risk medical procedures. The innovative transplant protocol designed by Dr Dwivedi, combined with the skilled efforts of our staff, ensured a smooth procedure and swift recovery for the young girl,” says Dr Raj Nagarkar, MD & Chief of Surgical Oncology & Robotic Services, HCG Manavata Cancer Centre (HCGMCC).

Sickle cell anaemia is a genetic disorder where red blood cells become rigid and sickle-shaped, leading to blocked blood flow, pain and potential organ damage. It occurs when a person inherits two abnormal haemoglobin S genes, one from each parent.

Nashik Doctors Remove Tricky Bilateral Adrenal Tumour From 21-Year-Old

In a tale of medical triumph and human resilience, doctors at HCG Manavata Cancer Centre (HCGMCC) in Nashik successfully removed a tricky bilateral adrenal tumour from 21-year-old Mohammed Zaid, who had been grappling with a life-threatening condition called pheochromocytoma. This complex and risky surgery, which lasted over six and a half hours, was performed despite Zaid’s severe and uncontrolled hypertension. Hailing from Malegaon, Zaid had been living with uncontrolled hypertension that rendered previous treatment attempts ineffective. The journey to recovery began when he arrived at HCGMCC, seeking help for his relentless medical condition. Under the leadership of Dr Raj Nagarkar, Managing Director & Chief of Surgical Oncology & Robotic Services, the medical team embarked on a mission to save Zaid’s life.

Dr. Raj Nagarkar

“When Mohammed Zaid came to us, he was suffering from severe, uncontrolled hypertension. Despite medication, his blood pressure remained unmanageable. Earlier medical tests at other national institutions revealed a growing mass near his adrenal gland, leading to the diagnosis of pheochromocytoma. This mass caused significant hormonal imbalances, resulting in his fluctuating blood pressure. The stakes were high, with the risk of increased blood pressure during surgery and a potential dangerous drop afterward,” says Dr Raj Nagarkar, Managing Director & Chief of Surgical Oncology & Robotic Services, HCG Manavata Cancer Centre (HCGMCC) & Hospitals.

Before arriving at HCGMCC, Zaid had undergone multiple medical interventions. Medications and procedures like chemoembolization, aimed at halting blood flow to the tumour, proved unsuccessful. He even suffered a stroke (cerebral haemorrhage and paralysis) post-procedure and MIBG therapy, a nuclear medicine treatment, showed limited success.

“Upon his visit to our outpatient department (OPD), we thoroughly reviewed his medical reports and consulted with our radiology team. The tumour was obstructing blood flow to vital organs like the stomach, kidneys and liver. Given the complexity and risks involved, we decided to proceed with surgery, fully informing the patient’s family about the potential dangers,” adds Dr Nagarkar.

Despite the high risk, the dedicated surgical team, including Dr Vikas Jain, Dr Rajendra Dhondge, Dr Owais Sayyed, Dr Shaudharya V., Dr Praveenkumar Surpur; anaesthesia experts Dr Nayana Kulkarni, Dr Ravindra Tandale and Dr Jitendra Mahajan; and intensivist Dr Purva Magarkar successfully executed the surgery.

Pheochromocytoma is a condition where a tumour around the adrenal gland disrupts hormonal balance, leading to uncontrolled hypertension. Symptoms often include persistent headaches and irregular heartbeats. The surgery’s success stands as a testament to the advanced medical capabilities and compassionate care at HCG Manavata Cancer Centre, offering renewed hope to patients facing similar life-threatening conditions.

“The patient’s blood pressure normalized immediately post-surgery, eliminating the need for further medication. Mohammed Zaid was transferred from the ICU to a regular ward within a day and began eating normally soon after. The successful surgery not only highlights our team’s skill and precision but also our commitment to providing exceptional patient care,” concludes Dr Nagarkar.

Zaid’s story is one of hope and determination, underscoring the importance of advanced medical interventions and the dedication of healthcare professionals in overcoming even the most daunting medical challenges.

World’s 1st Documented Surgical Removal Of Large Neuroectodermal Tumour Successfully Performed At HCGMCC

HCG Manavata Cancer Centre (HCGMCC) has achieved a ground-breaking medical milestone with the successful surgical removal of a large neuroectodermal tumour in the neck. The operation marks the world’s first documented case of such a procedure, underscoring the hospital’s expertise and commitment to innovative cancer treatment. Mrs Jayashree Pardeshi, a 56-year-old long-term breast cancer survivor from Jalgaon, was diagnosed with a neuroectodermal tumour. Last month, upon visiting the hospital, Dr Raj Nagarkar, Chief Robotic Surgeon and Head at HCG Manavata Hospital, recommended surgery as the only viable treatment option. The surgery required exceptional precision due to the tumour’s attachment to multiple vital structures in the neck. Despite these challenges, the surgical team successfully removed the tumour.

“Mrs Pardeshi faced a new medical challenge two years ago when she developed a swelling on the left side of her neck. Imaging and biopsy confirmed it as a neuroectodermal tumour, an exceptionally rare condition with only five cases reported globally. Initially, the patient underwent two rounds of chemotherapy but discontinued further treatment. Returning a year later, the tumour had significantly grown, causing severe discomfort and restricting her head movement. We knew immediately that the best course of treatment at this stage was surgery, and we are glad that just ten days post-operation, the patient is significantly relieved and is recovering well,” says Dr Raj Nagarkar, Managing Director & Chief of Surgical Oncology & Robotic Services, HCG Manavata Cancer Centre (HCGMCC) & Hospitals.

Dr Nagarkar, along with his experienced team comprising Dr Rajendra Dhondge, Head of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery; Dr Mohsina Hussain and Dr Koustabh Kumar, Consultants in Head and Neck Oncosurgery; and Dr Vishal Rana, Resident Doctor, performed the surgery to extract the tumour, which weighed approximately 800 grams and measured 15 centimetres in diameter.

Dr. Raj Nagarkar

“The case not only underscores the rarity of neuroectodermal tumours in the neck but also the complexity and success of the surgical intervention. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first documented case of such a large neuroectodermal tumour being surgically removed. This achievement showcases the remarkable capabilities of our surgical team and reaffirms our commitment to providing world-class care to our patients,” concludes Dr Nagarkar.
