C.Rly. ride to the top of the table


Central Railway scored a crucial 3-1 win over Union Bank of India in a Super Division match of the MHAL League 2017-2018, at the MHAL-Mahindra Stadium, Churchgate on Saturday evening.

The three points earned for this win has taken Central to the top of the 9-team league with 16 points from five wins, one draw and one loss. Central require just a point from their concluding game against lowly Sports Authority of India to seal their place in the final. Union Bank are in sixth spot with eight points from six matches.

The railwaymen were well-served by their industrious forward Mohammed Nizamuddin who scored two goals (12th and 33rd minutes) and Anup Walmiki (46th minute) to complete their win. Prince Chaurasia scored Union Bank’s lone goal (31st minute).

Later in the evening, Mumbai Customs stormed to a convincing 8-2 win against Mumbai Port Trust. The highlight of Customs win was Jayesh Jadhav who scored a hat-trick of goals (11th, 25th and 49th minutes). Dharambir Yadav scored two (27th and 37th minutes), while Hasan Basha (35th minute), Vinay Walmiki (62nd minute) and Joshua Vessaokar (70th minute) got the other goals for Customs. Mumbai Port Trust got their goals through Venkatesh Devkar (48th minute) and Jatinder Singh (66th minute).

Nizamuddin of Central Railway and Jadhav of Customs won the ‘Man of the Match’ awards in their respective matches and both received a cash award of Rs 1,000 each.

There will be no match on Sunday. On Monday, Union Bank of India take on Central Railway at 2.30pm and later in the evening Mumbai Customs play against Mumbai Port Trust at 4.15pm.
