Fancied Atharav Kharat from Mumbai Suburbs overcame Raigad’s Apritim Banerjee 30-28 in the boys under-13 singles second round of the Maharashtra State Open badminton tournament, organized by Badminton Organisation of Raigad at Vashi’s Merchants Club here today.
With the organizers receiving around 1000 entries, the matches are also be held at Dy Patil Sports Academy as well as at Sea Breeze Club at Nerul.
The day’s toughest tie saw Atharav and Apritim fighting tooth and nail right from the word go. Atharv just about managed to keep abreast of his rival by a point or two only to see Apritim catching him at 27-27. However, Atharav got the opening at this stage with a cross court deceptive flick and followed it by a drop shot that saw him clinching the tie. Parth Deore, an 11-year-old boy from Nashik played impressive all round game while beating his senior opponent Swamin Dhyani (Aur) 30-19.
The matches upto quarterfinals are played on best of one game of 30 points basis, while semifinals and finals will be of best of three games of 15 points.
