It was a day for city’s tennis prodigies with Arjun Shirgaonkar and Malvika Shukla of Podar International School, Khar running away with top honours in the boys’ and girls’ Under-16 tennis championship at the Sports For All 2016, at the DY Patil Stadium today.
With two of the favourites, Arjun and Veer Shah of Jamnabai Narsee School involved in the title clash, it was an intense encounter with both players giving a good account for themselves and it was Arjun who eventually held on to his nerve to win the first set 6-5 (7-1). With a thrilling show in the opening set, the competition in the second game was expected to go up a notch higher. But as luck would have it, Veer developed cramps midway and had to concede the match to bring an immature end to the high octane clash. In the third place play-off, Aaryan Dhamejani of Lilavatibai Podar High School beat Satyap Ilme of Gopi Birla Memorial School by 9-5 to win the bronze.
In the girls’ championship, Malvika did not face much challenge from her opponent Sharanya Naik of Jamnabai Narsee School and won the match 6-3, 6-0 to walk away with the gold medal, while Kiara D’Souza of Lilavatibai Podar High School beat Mitali Shetty of Bhavans A.H Wadia by 9-8 (7-4).
In the boys’ Under-12 taekwondo, Aryaman Thakker of Dr. D.Y Patil International School, Worli won the gold medal in the +50 kgs weight category, while Anurag Singh of Radcliff School took the gold in -50 kgs weight classification.
Maharasthra Military School, Murbad beat St. Augustine High School, Nerul 4-0 to win the gold medal in hockey Under-14 category, played at the Maharashtra Hockey Association. In the boys’ Under-12 category, it was a clash between St. Augustine High School, Nerul (A) vs St. Augustine High School, Nerul (B), with the B team winning the bragging rights with a 2-1 victory. The girls’ Under-16 finals saw Mary Immaculate High School, Borivali beat Delhi Public School, Nerul 5-0 to win the gold medal. In the Under-14 category, it was Mary Immaculate again who reigned supreme over their opponents St. Xavier High School, Airoli with a 7-0 victory grab the top prize, while in the Under-12 category, it was SBOA Public School who beat Mary Immaculate 2-1 to win the gold.
In the boys’ Under-14 basketball event, Vibgyor High School, Goregaon beat DAV, Nerul 16-11 to win the gold medal.
In the boys’ Under-14 kabaddi championships, R. F Naik Vidyalaya and Jr. College beat Tungareshwar Academy, Thane39-13 to enter the semifinals, while N.M Joshi Marg Municipal Seconday School; Currey Road beat Antonio D’Souza High School 36-10 to earn their last four spot. Saraswati Secondary School, Naupada also made it to the round of four with 41-17 win over Matoshri Vidyamandir, Mankhurd 42-17.
It was also the opening day for fencing championship, with Khushi Dukhande of Mary Immaculate Girls High School beating Shifa Khan of Sri Vani Vidyashala High School (Kalyan) 5-3 in the opening round match of Under -17 girls Epee category, while in foil category Cheryl Chaurasia of The Blossoms Sunderbai Thackersey English High School beat Isha Vazirani of Cathedral and John Connon School 5-4.
In the handball championship, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan Vidyalaya, Borivali beat Ryan International School, Kharghar 10-4 in the boys’ Under-14 category. In another match, Gopi Birla Memorial School beat St. Joseph HigH School, Panvel 9-0.
