Anannaya Basak, daughter of top national table tennis champions – Arup and Kanchan Basak – displayed superb all round game to score shock wins over state-ranked Charvi Kawle and Mrunmayee Mhatre to upstage defending champions Mulund Gymkhana to 3-1 win which virtually assured Andheri YMCA of women’s first division honours in the MSDTTA Inter-Club premier division tie, at Juhu Vile Parle Gymkhana Club here today. Earlier, they had beaten MCF and JLTTA both, by identical 3-0 margins.

Anannya,at present being coached by Eric Fernandes at Andheri YMCA Centre, played simply some eye-catching strokes on both flanks. Both Charvi and Mrunmayee struggling to match her forehand drives as well as her backhand counter attack. Anannaya, though did drop a game to each of them before she could gauge her rivals strategy. She beat Mrunmayee 11-9, 11-7, 13-15, 11-7, and her win over Charvi was equally emphatic (3-11, 11-7, 11-9, 11-7). Anannya in between paired with Shweta Joshi, a former state player, to give the all –important double win over Charvi and Mrunmaee in straight games (11-5, 13-11, 11-8).
Defending men’s champions Juhu Vile Parle Gymkhana, led by former state champion and state No.1 Noel Pinto , meanwhile continued their march to retain their crown, disposing off their rivals without much ado. However, for MCF, their captain Akshay Gogri put up most disappointing how, losing his singles to both junior Dev Shroff and Noel Pinto easily.
CSMSS teams in 2nd 3rd and 4th divisions ensured their medals with good performance by their players.
