Anannya Basak set for a triple crown


 

Junior India ranked  Anannya Basak, seeded second behind top seeded Divya Deshpande in the women singles’ and youth girls top seed, scored impressive wins in both the events as she inched closer to a triple crown in the MCF -All Mumbai 4-Star Ranking Table Tennis tournament, which gets underway at their complex at Borivali last night.

Anannya first downed exciting Manasi Chiplunkar 10-12, 8-11, 11-9, 11-7, 11-4, 12-10 to storm into women’s singles  semi finals.  Later, she stopped the fine run of Ananya Chande 11-6, 15-13, 12-10,11-9 for a spot  in the youth girls semi finals. Meanwhile Divya, just dropped a game to Hiya Doshi before joining Anannya in the last four with a 11-6, 11-5. 11-5, 11-2 win. And the pair of Divya and Anannya has already clinched the women’s doubles title at the expense of seasoned Mamta Prabhu and Senhora D’Souza. They triumphed 11-9,11-3,13-11.

 

While in the men’s singles, home players, bespectacled Jyot Vora and Swayam Ibrampurkar put up impressive show while making the fourth round.  Jyot fought back after trailing 1-2 to beat Nilesh Prabhu 3-2,and Swayam, after smarting from his unexpected loss in the youth boys singles, played with a lot of patience to outwit Ranjit Choudhary in straight games to advance into the fourth round.
