Akshay,Bhavisha win medals


Akshay Khot and Bhavisha Kothari did their respective clubs -Sprinters and Ace Athletic Club- proud by winning gold in their 200m run in the men and women categories of the Mumbai City District Amateur Athletic meet, held at the University Stadium , Marines Lines, here today.

Akshay, a 21- years-old from Rizvi college, took a brisk start and romped home, leaving the rest of the field way behind in fine timing of 21.3 secs, which incidentally is his best timing so far. Akshay had won gold in the State Open meet in 21.81 secs and also took gold in the Chennai open nationals earlier this season.

Another collegian Bhavisha, a 20-year-old from Hinduja College , likewise triumphed in the women’s 200m run , leaving her rivals far behind,clocking 28.8 secs.In fact, Bhavisha went one better as she claimed the long jump gold also with a leap of 4.81 mts.

Mariya Karachiwala from Parsi Panchayat in the girls under-18 became the fastest sprinter when she bagged gold in the 100m sprint in 14.2 secs, while Stunners’ Arun Kumar Pandey emerged best in the boys under-18 400 m run with a timing of 53.2 secos.

Former international athlete and Arjuna Awardee Adille Sumariwala, now president of Athletic Federation of India, presented medals to some of the winners.

GIRLS: U-16: 200m: Tanvi Patil (St. Agnes HS) – 26. secs. 1000m: Shanella D’Souza (St, Agnes HS (Byculla) – 3:30.9 secs. U-14: 6000m: Sehyr Patel (JB Petit) – 1:48.8 secs.
BOYS: U-18: 400m: Arun Kumar Pandey (Stunners Ath Club) – 53.2 secs. 1500m: Manjunath Chavan (Sprinters ) – 4:26.1 secs. U-16: 1000m: Krishna Kesariwani (Tackmasters) – 3:04.5 secs.
