Akshaya,Shashank emerge sprint champions


 

Akshaya Iyer  from Thane’s Achievers Club, pipped her teammate Siddhi Hiray in a thrilling finish to win the women’s 100m gold in 12.0 secs and in the process eclipsed the existing mark of 12.3 secs in the 42nd Bombay YMCA State Level Athletic championships at the University Stadium, Marine Lines here today. Even the second-placed Siddhi’s timing of 12.2 secs also improved upon the existing mark.

It proved to be double delight for the Thane’s Achievers Club, as their Shashank Shinde breezed past a strong field for men’s 100m gold. However, Shashank could not  better the existing record of  10.4 secs, as he clocked 10.7 secs.

 

Sharing the day’s honours with the Thane’s athletes were Mumbai’s Spandon Eco Foundation, with their athletes,  Snehal Hirave and Akansha Shelar capturing golds in their respective women’s 5000m and under-18 girls 1500m events.

Result of record-breaking event:  WOMEN: 100m:  1. Akshaya Iyer (Achievers SC -Thane) – 12.0 secs (NMR) – OR: 12.3 secs; 2. Siddhi Hiray  (Achievers SC -Thane) – 12.2 secs (BMR); 3. Deepika  Kotian (GST-Customs –Pune) – 12.6 secs.

BOYS U-18: 1500m: Rohit Mandavkar (Achievers SC -Thane) – 4:17.8 secs. Long Jump: Shubham Patekar (Achievers SC -Thane) -6.15 mts.
