Cricket legend Ajit Wadekar who served Indian Cricket team in various capacities, besides leading the Indian team on 1971 historic twin tour of England and West Indies and winning the overseas series for the first time, passed away yesterday night due to heart failure. He was 77. Mr. Wadekar is survived by his wife Rekha , sons Prasad, Vipul and daughter kashmira. The cremation ceremony was delayed as his son Vipul is expected to arrive today midnight. Mr. Wadekar was admitted to Jaslok Hospital yesterday at 8.45 pm from his Worli residence, as he was feeling uncomfortable.
Mr. Wadekar was a stylish left hander who was known for his wonderful stroke play at No. 3 and was an excellent slip fielder. He was the only cricketer who reached to the top position in State Bank of India. The Prime Minister of India Mr. Narendra Modi, chief Minister of Maharashtra Devendra Fadnavis have paid tributes to the legend on his sad demise. His body will be kept at his Sportsfield , Worli Residence at 10 am and at 12 noon will be cremated at Shivaji Park crematorium.
