Achintya,Saamia reign supreme in boys’ and girls’ U-17 badminton


The curtains came down on the badminton events of Sports For All 2016, with Achintya Agarwal of Ryan International School and Saamia Shah of Fazlani L’Academie Globale winning the Under-17 boys’ and girls’ title respectively at the DY Patil Stadium here today.

Achintya taking on the top seeded Aditya Reddy of St.Lawrence High School, Borivali made a stunning comeback to win the match 19-21, 21-8 & 21-17 to annexe the title. Saamia seeded third in the tournament took on the top seeded Divya Hedge of Lilavatibai Podar High School in a grueling title encounter. The match lived up to everyone’s expectation and the intense battle saw Saamia holding on to her nerves to win the match 22-20, 18-21 & 21-19.

 

In the boys’ Under-15 badminton event, fourth seeded Aditya Desai of Utpal Shanghvi Global School beat second seeded Vaibhav Tewari of Reliance Foundation School, Koparkhairane 17-21, 21-16 & 21-1 to win the title, while Urvi Thakurdesai of Euro School, Thane, seeded fourth beat third seeded Juhi Rohra 21-13 & 21-11 to run away with gold medal in the girls’ event.

In Kabaddi, the girls from Ramsheth Thakur Public School did a star turn for their team in Under-14 kabaddi competition. Going against one of the pre-tournament favourites, Swami Vivekanand High School & Junior College (Chembur), Ramsheth girls’ dominated the proceedings to win the summit clash 40-14. In the third place play-off match Radcliff School beat St. Xavier’s High School 57-35 to run away with the bronze medal.

 

In tennis Under-14 boys’ category, Saheb Sodhi of Jamnabai Narsee School beat Ramesh Raghunandan of Amrita Vidyalaya 6-1, 6-0 to win the title, while the third place went to Manas  Sinha of Apeejay School, who beat Atharva Patil of Ryan International School, Nerul 9-2.

 

In the Mixed Martial Arts Under -13 girls’category, Sayyed Zeenat of Anjuman –I-Islam’s Dr. M.I.J Girls High Scholl & Junior College won the gold in the +53 kgs weight category, while Aasiya Shaikh of Ryan International School (Goregaon) finished on top in -43 kgs weight classification. In the boys’ Under-13 event, Krish Satra of Fatima High School took the gold in -53 kgs weight category, while Mohd. Zaid Shaikh of Al Nadi Ul Falah English School annexed the gold in the -48kgs weight classification.

 

In chess Under-15 girls’ competition, Shristhi Sridhar of New Horizon Public School, Airoli won the gold, while DPS,Nerul Duo of Anushka Joshi and Samiksha Sarkar won the silver and bronze respectively.

 

Day 16 also marked the first day of the hockey competition, which is being played at the Maharashtra Hockey Association. The boys’ Under-16 category saw Kendriya Vidyalaya, Ambernath beat Rajashree Shahu Vidyalaya, Navi Mumbai 8-2 in their first round match in the Under-16 boys’ category, while Our Lady of Dolours also got their campaign off to a flying start with a 3-0 win over St. Augustine High School, Nerul.
