The 20th day of Sports For All 2016 was a starry affair with ace Indian archers Atanu Das and Bombayla Devi Laishram gracing the occasion to celebrate the spirit of sports amongst 5000 young champions from over 120 schools present at the DY Patil Stadium here on Saturday.
The duo spent the day interacting with the kids and motivating them to live their dream of making it big in sports and consider taking it as a career option.
Both the archers, who represented India in the Olympics lauded the efforts of SFA and were overwhelmed to see such a large number of kids including so many girls participating in various different sporting categories. They gave an inspirational rendition on the importance of sports to the young champions and also shared important tips with them as well as sharing their own journey with them.
Atanu and Bombayla also took part in an exhibition game, where they teamed up with budding archers and went head to head against each other.
Atanu, who was the only Indian male archer at the Rio Olympics 2016, was highly impressed with SFA and felt that the platform provided by them to these kids will for sure help in carving out future champions.“I have never seen such kind of sporting extravaganza being organized at the school level. SFA has been successful in bringing in so many young athletes participating in different sporting categories and this will only help them in developing their skills and opportunity to perform at the biggest stage in school sports and most importantly get noticed in the field of sports,” the 2013 Bronze Medalists at the World Cup Mixed Team said.
Bombayla reiterated his views and said that it does take her down the memory lane and feels that India needs more initiative like SFA to turn the country into a sporting powerhouse. “The facility at SFA is world class and the way it has been organized augurs well for the future of sports in India. Being a sportsperson myself, I realize the importance of having a system like this place and I am quite sure that the initiative will help in spotting lot of talents and give India a pool of young athletes,” the 2010 Commonwealth Games gold medalist and the Arjuna Awardee said.
Rishikesh Joshi, founder and brain behind SFA, appreciated the efforts of the duo to come and spend time with the young athletes and encourage them in their endeavor to excel in sports. “It gives us immense pleasure to have these two champions amongst us. It does mean a lot for these young kids to see and interact with these sporting heroes. I am sure that the knowledge shared by Atanu and Bombayla will go a long way to inspire these little champions and work to represent India at the highest level,” Rishikesh Joshi said.
