Delhi teenager Anahat Singh, who had recently won both the National girls’ under-19 and women’s titles, stamped her authority by winning a grand double in the 78th CCI-Western India Slam Squash Championship 2023, organized by the Cricket Club of India (CCI) under the auspices of the SRFI (Squash Rackets Federation of India).
The 15-year-old Anahat outdueled compatriot Nirupama Dubey marching to an 11-5, 11-2 and 11-3 in the girls’ under-19 final at the CCI squash courts on Saturday morning. Later, in the afternoon she continued with her impressive showing to quash the challenge from Maharashtra’s Janet Vidhi coasting to a quick 11-0, 11-2 and 11-4 to win double crowns.
Later, second seed Veer Chotrani clinched the men’s title. Chotrani struck prime form and played some superb strokes to unsettle the number one seed Suraj Chand and secure a comfortable 8-11, 11-7, 11-7 and 11-7 victory in an all-Maharashtra men’s final.
In an engrossing boys’ under-17 final, Uttar Pradesh’s second seed toppled Maharashtra’s number one seed Dev Sharma clinching a well-deserved 10-12, 11-6, 8-11, 11-8 and 11-1 win.
Meanwhile, in the girls’ under-13 final contested between Tamil Nadu players, unseeded Goushika M. scored a stunning win against top seed D. Nitiyasree by recording a 11-5, 6-11, 12-10 and 11-9 win to emerge victorious.
