76th Police Shield cricket starts Saturday


 Leading cricketers, representing 16 top teams from the city, will be seen in action during the UPL-76th Police Invitation Shield Cricket Tournament 2020-2021, which is scheduled to commence from Saturday, December 2, 2023.

This prestigious tournament, sponsored by United Phosphorus Limited, will be played at different venues across Mumbai.

The champions stand to receive a handsome award of Rupees One Lakh and the glittering trophy while the losing finalists would be presented with an award of Rs 50,000 and the runners-up trophy. In additional there would individual awards and the ‘Player-of-the- tournament’.

The teams that will be vying for the top honours in this competition include defending champions MIG Cricket Club, runners-up Parsee Gymkhana, Cricket Club of India, Parkophene Cricketers, Islam Gymkhana, Bombay Gymkhana, P.J. Hindu Gymkhana, New Hind Sporting Club, National CC, Karnatak SA, Shivaji Park Gymkhana, MCA Colts, Victory CC, Dr. D.Y. Patil SA, Sponsors XI and hosts Mumbai Police Gymkhana.

The teams have been divided into four groups and the matches initially will be played on a league basis. The matches will be played over 70-overs format over three weekends. The top team from each group will qualify for the semi-finals on December 23 and 24 and the dates for 3-day grand finale is yet to be decided.

Reigning champs MIG Cricket Club will clash with New Hind SC in the opening Group-A match. Last editions runners-up Parsee Gymkhana will meet former champs MCA Colts in a Group-B encounter. Hosts Mumbai Police Gymkhana open their campaign against Dr. D.Y. Patil SA in Group-D.

All the Matches will be played as per the New Model Rules of the Mumbai Cricket Association.

The groupings — Group-A: MIG Cricket Club, New Hind Sporting Club, Karnatak SA, Shivaji Park Gymkhana.

Group-B: Parsee Gymkhana, MCA Colts, Cricket Club of India, Islam Gymkhana.

Group-C: Bombay Gymkhana, Sponsors XI, National CC, Victory CC.

Group-D: Parkophene Cricketers, P.J. Hindu Gymkhana, Dr. D.Y. Patil SA, Mumbai Police Gymkhana.
