Yesteryear stars are set to once again sparkle and showcase their versatility and dribbling skills in the inaugural edition of the Mumba Masters Championship 2023, which is scheduled to be played at the Mumbai Hockey Association Limited (MHAL) stadium, Churchgate on November 4 and 5, 2023.
Hockey legends, Olympians Darryl D’Souza, Gavin Ferreira along with Indian internationals John Fernandes, Devinder Kumar, Girish Pimpale, K.K. Poonacha, Romeo Albuquerque, Dhananjay Mahadik to name a few and the cream of Mumbai hockey stalwarts will be seen in action over the two days.
Eight teams, including an outstation outfit from Coorg, ‘Coorg Hawks’ have confirmed their participation in this tournament, which would be played on a league basis initially. The teams will be divided into two pools of four teams each and thet top three teams from each pool will qualify and compete for the Plate Trophy, Challengers Trophy and the ultimate Champions Trophy.
The event has been conceptualized by former Maharashtra, Mumbai and Mumbai Customs hockey player Stanley Fernandes. The former Mumbai captain and former Superintendent of Mumbai Customs has the support of Entrepreneur and creative director, Karl Gomes, National-level hockey player, broadcaster and commentator, Alex Joseph and former Mumbai hockey captain Vallaki Kamath, and they are instrumental in organizing this tournament.
“Our aim is to promote hockey in the city, which is India’s national sport. By organizing this kind of event, it would give an opportunity for hockey legends, who have served India and Mumbai with distinction to return to the hockey field. We welcome all the ardent hockey enthusiasts to come and watch the dazzling action which is set to unfold on the MHAL turf,” said Fernandes.

After introducing this event in Mumbai, we plan to take this tournament to other cities and even globally. We hope to inspire many youngsters to take up hockey and fitness as a way of life”.
The matches will be streamed ‘live’ by SportVot and fans all over the world can watch the matches in the comfort of their homes.
The Plate Trophy and Challenger Trophy matches will be played before the Championship Trophy final on Sunday, November 5.
The participating teams: Mumbai Raje, Savio Hockey Foundation, Hockey Navi Mumbai, Mumbai Port Trust, Hockey Dadar, Coorg Hawks, Sunday Sultans and Mumbai Customs.
