Ananya scores over Thea; Riya records two wins

Ananya Shah was a bit hesitant but managed to carve out a straight game 21-13, 21-18 win against Thea Sheth in a Girl’s Under-17 round of 16 match of the CCI-GMBA Yonex Sunrise District Badminton Championship 2023, and played at the CCI badminton courts on Monday.

Ananya Shah scored a straight game 21-13, 21-18 win against Thea Sheth in a Girl’s Under-17 round of 16 match.

The 16-year-old Ananya, who trains with Hufrish Nariman at the Cricket Club of India, returned to the courts after a two-month break as she was studying for exams. She looked a bit rusty by making a series of unforced errors. Thea capitalized on her opponents mistakes, but also played well and with her clever change of direction had Ananya in a bit of bother. In the second game, Ananya raced to a 8-1 lead and then fouled on her serve. Thea then won six points on the trot to narrow the lead, but Ananya managed to keep her cool and won points with her aggressive play to stay ahead before closing out the match to advance to the quarter-finals.

Meanwhile, second seed Riya Vinherkar dropped just five points in defeating Akhila Meka in two games at 21-4, 21-1 in another Girl’s Under-17 pre-quarter-final.

Earlier, Riya Vinherkar has a much easier time as she stromed past Avani Singh recording a quick 21-1, 21-2 victory in a Girls’ Under-15 round of 16 match.
