Ave Maria Sports Club were in rocking form and stormed past Hockey Navi Mumbai as they recorded a convincing 7-1 victory in a Men’s Open quarter-final match of the 42nd Willingdon Catholic Gymkhana rink hockey tournament, played at the floodlit WCG turf.
Leading Ave Maria’s charge was former international Tushar Khandekar, Satish M. and Savio Nayak all scoring two goals each while Keith Mathews contributed one to complete the winning tally. Hockey Navi Mumbai scored one goal through Monesh N. efforts.
In another quarter-final match, UBI Boys sent Central Railway off the track by coasting to a 4-1 win. Aamid Khan scored a brace of goals while Mohit S. and Md Sathwik chipped in with one apiece to lead UBI Boys to a satisfying win and a place in the semi-finals. Central Railway managed to get one goal back when Md Nizamuddin hit the target.
Earlier, in a Women’s Open quarter-final encounter, Western Railway and Mansi Foundation were locked in a tense tussle for supremacy. But the experienced railway women held their nerves to scrape past Mansi Foundation snatch a close 7-6 win to chug into the semi-finals.
For Western Railway Manisha C. scored a hat-trick of goals, while Anupa Barla netted two and Vatika Rawat and Prabla Kaur scored one each. Mansi Foundation was well-served by Raju Ranwa who also notched up a hat-trick and Akansha Singh scored a brace while Sumita H. got one to keep them in the fight.
Results – Women Open (Quarter-finals): Western Railway 7 (Manisha C. 3, Anupa Barla 2, Vatika Rawat, Prabla Kaur) beat Mansi Foundation 6 (Raju Ranwa 3, Akansha Singh 2, Sumita H.).
Men’s Open (Quarter-finals): Mumbai Customs Red 2 Jayesh Jadhav, Iktidar Ishrat) beat Union Bank of India 1 (Vinod Saini).
