Ananya Chande in line to win double crowns


Ananya Chande is line to win double crowns as she advanced to the finals of both the women’s singles and girls’ under-17 singles competition of the JVPG-TSTTA District Table Tennis Championship 2022, at the Juhu Vile Parle Gymkhana (JVPG) Club table tennis hall.

In the women’s semi-finals, the top seed Ananya started on a shaky note against unseeded Sampada Bhiwandkar and quickly lost the opening two games. But, Ananya showed exceptional fighting qualities and came roaring back to win four of the next five games to record a come-from-behind 5-11, 4-11, 11-8, 11-9, 7-11, 11-8, and 11-3 victory to take her place in the final.

Earlier in the girls’ under-17 penultimate round encounter, the third-seeded Ananya registered a stunning straight games win against second-seeded Sana D’Souza charging to an 11-4, 11-3, 11-8, and 11-5 victory.

Ananya is set to encounter another strong challenge from Anannya Basak in the battle for the women’s title. The third seeded Anannya easily defeated Shravani Loke in straight games cruising to 11-4, 11-8, 11-6, and 11-6 win.

In the girls’ under-17 summit round, Ananya will be up against the number seed Divyansh Bhowmick who managed to overcome Urvi Churi in six keenly contested games at 8-11, 11-4, 7-11, 11-6, 11-6, and 11-6.

In Men’s singles semi-final action, second seed Chinmay Somaiya quashed the aspirations of young Jash Modi charging to a 11-7, 11-1, 10-12, 3-11, 12-10, and 11-6 win, while Yash Dalvi dropped just one game in easily defeating Bhavitaya Shah 12-10, 2-11, 11-9, 11-9, and 11-8.

The veteran men’s singles final will be contested between Sameer Bhate and Nishant Kulkarni. In semi-final matches, Bhate smoothly sailed past Manish Deodhar 11-6, 13-11, and 12-10, while Kulkarni got the better of senior paddler Yogesh Desai 11-4, 11-5, and 11-5.
