Maharashtra boys and girls excelled in the 34th Junior Nationals waterpolo while Indian Railways dominated in the men’s 37th Senior Nationals waterpolo conducted by Swimming Federation of India held at Bangalore .
The state boys under 17 defeated Karnataka in the semi finals 13-4 to enter the final. However, they lost to Bengal in the finals to settle for silver. The girls earned the bronze medal with a splendid performance by Rujuta Kulkarni who scored 8 goals thus resulting in the 11-8 victory over the Karnataka. But they had to settled for bronze, beating Bengal 9-6 while Kerala earned gold with a facile win over Karnataka in the final.
The Maharashtra teams was mentored by the team of coaches , viz. Shourya Karandikar, Tejas Pathare, Datta Tare and Shubhankar Thosar.
Indian Railways sprang a surprise by upsetting reigning champions Indian Services 14-12 in pulsuating men’s final. The Railways players, who trailed upto third quarter, came back strongly in the deciding fourth and final quarter to emerge winners.
