Ex Jr. India footballer Barretto passes away


Former Junior India and Tata Sports Club footballer Joaquim Barretto, 73, passed away after suffering a cardiac arrest at his residence, Borivali, Mumbai early Friday morning. Barretto is survived by his wife Myra, son Sandokan and daughters Alethea and Slupeanic.

Barretto a sturdy and dependable defender started his career with Central Railway and then accepted an offer to represent the famed Tata Sports Club in the domestic tournaments. The Tata’s youngster twice represented the Junior Indian team in the Asian Youth Football Trophy in 1973 and 1974. The Indian team finished joint winners with Iran in 1974.

 

He represented Tata’s with distinction for several years and also captained the team in 1979 when they remained unbeaten in winning the Hardwood League. In the same year, he led the Maharashtra state team in the National Football Championship for the Santosh Trophy.
