Sports enthusiast Hugh is no more


Sports enthusiast Hugh Fernandes passed away all of a sudden at his residence in Bandra on Monday afternoon. Fernandes, 75, who suffered a cardiac arrest, is survived by his wife Mercia and two daughters Michelle and Mallaika.

The affable Fernandes, fondly known as ‘Hughie’, was passionate about sports, especially football and hockey. He enjoyed many roles as player, promoter and administrator. Fernandes did yeoman service for both football and hockey in the city as he founded the Sea View Sports Club hockey and football teams for both men and women, which he ran for almost four decades. The Sea View teams provided opportunities for upcoming football and hockey players to showcase their talent on the local circuit.

Fernandes also played an active role as an administrator and served the MDFA (Mumbai District Football Association) for several years and also was the vice-president of the association. He was also associated with the Mumbai Hockey Association as an umpire and later was a technical match official.

With Hugh Fernandes’ sad demise Mumbai has lost one it most ardent sports lover, who has contributed immensely to hockey and football.

The final rites and burial took place at the St. Andrew’s Church, Bandra today evening.
