Paidi Jairaj was a renowned Indian film actor, director and producer known for his works primarily in Hindi, Marathi, Punjabi, Bhojpuri, English, Russian and Gujarati language films, besides Telugu theatre. In fact, he holds the record of having the longest career in Indian films.
Born on 28th September 1909 , Jairaj came to Mumbai from Hyderabad to find work in films. Because of his strong physique, he was offered his first film ‘Jagmagati Jawani’ in 1930 by filmmaker Mama Warerkar famous Marathi playwright. Those days, Jairaj performed all the stunts in the film on his own and this helped him in his long career which extended even in post independence days. After playing lead hero, he switched over to character roles in his long career of six decades, in which he performed in more than 300 films. He was conferred with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke award in 1980.
On the occasion of his 111th birth anniversary recently, Mr. T. Sreekanth a Graphic designer from Hyderabad, who is passionate about films, has released his biography suitably titled ‘ To Bombay with Love : P. Jairaj’s Life, Times & Films’, foreword of which has been written by renowned film maker Shyam Benegal. The author had earlier written biography of veteran Telegu film hero Late Shri Kanta Rao. For this book on P. Jairaj, he had visited Mumbai several times to meet various people connected with the industry including veteran actors like Dilip Kumar, Chandrashekhar , Ms. Jabeen, Prem Chopra and veteran make up man Pandhari Jukar. In short, the author has done a lot of hard work through extensive research to present his latest publication. The author is also actively involved in Heritage and Archaeological initiatives along with his friend Chandrashekar Singh on behalf of Intach Hyderabad.
According to the author, this biographical account is his humble attempt to document Jairaj’s life, times and films. The book also contains 400 photos.
