Gujarat Panthers had a great start to their campaign as they beat a strong Mumbai Leon Army team 50-40 in the opening match of the Kotak Mahindra Tennis Premier League played at the Celebration Club, Andheri here today.
The first set of matches which were played in a best of 10 point format saw Gujarat Panthers Karthik K, current India No 1 in Wheelchair category dominate Suresh Kumar, defeating him by a huge 8-2 margin. The Panthers followed up with another brilliant performance with the U-14 Boys winning their tie 7-3 and U-18 Girls holding their end at 5-5 to extend Gujarat’s lead to 10 points. In the women’s singles tie, Mumbai’s Vaidehee Chaudhari held an early lead and gave a tough fight to India No 5 Mahak Jain before settling for a draw at 15-15. The final Men’s doubles tie was the most exciting with National Champion and Runner UpNiki Poonacha and Aryan Goveas of Mumbai Leon Army up against Somdev Devvarman and Suresh Dakshineshwar. Aryan and Niki fought hard but were not able to bridge the 10 point gat, leveling the game 15-15 with Gujarat Panther winning the tie 50-40.
The inauguration for the 2nd Kotak Mahindra Bank Tennis Premier League was a star-studded affair with The tennis courts filled with film and tv personalities who had come to support founders Kunal Thakkur and Mrunal Jain. The celebrity team owners Leander Paes, Sonali Bendre Behl, Rakul Preet Singh and Divya Khosla Kumar were all present The event hosted by popular RJ Salil Acharya was attended by prominent personalities Vishal Bharadwaj, Arjun Rampal, Shashank Khaitan, Designers Nikhil & Shanatanu who played an exhibition match to promote the sport.
