Anand Gond and Anurag Chaudhary, who bagged a gold each in their respective men’s 100m and 400m runs, spearheaded the VPM Sports Club’s overall domination in the Poinsur Gymkhana 8th Open Athletic Meet, held under their annual Uttar Mumbai Kreeda Mahaotsav at Poinsur Gymkhana ground here today.
Anand clocked 11.8 secs, just about pipping Hitesh Jadhav of Sports Authority of India in the 100m sprint. While Anurag after a quick start, paced his run nicely to bag the 400m run in 55.3 secs. He, too, pushed SAI’s Durgesh Vadde (55.4 secs) to silver medal. However, both failed to overcome the existing marks by a fraction of a second.
Another VPM athlete Abhijeet Nair, who bagged gold in the men’s shot put with a throw of 16.40 mts, too, missed his teammate Tejas Dongre’s last year’s record of 16.21 mts. While Poorma Raorane (VPM SC) clinched gold in the women’s shot put – 13.31mts (Old record- 9.42mts). Overall , athletes – particularly girls- in lower age groups did commendably well, by bettering old records. Shravani Mali (under-16) and Pearl D’Souza (under-14), both from VPM SC, took golds in their respective 100m (13.0 ses) and discus throw events.
Shravani bettered Reshma Gore’s last year’s timing of 13.20 secs, while Pearl’s record-breaking effort (24.32 mts) eclipsed Pristal D’ouza mark of 24.18 mts.
