Malhar Joshi, playing at his aggressive best, downed Varun Gera 30-25 to storm into the boys under-17 semifinals the Mumbai Suburban District Sub-junior Badminton Championships, hosted by Kandivali Recreation Club at their newly laid badminton court here today. Varun, after matching Malahar stroke for stroke till midway, found Malhar faster and a bit more aggressive as he reeled off points galore to put an end to Varun’s resistence. Top seeded Atharva Joshi put Akshith Kiran in his place and beat him 30-13, while lanky Saheel D’Souza make short work of Lionel Monteiro 30-15.
However, there were upsets in the boys under-13 singles, when both the top seeds Pranit Somani and Kabir Barod bit the dust. Malhar Mehendale ousted Pranit 30-20, while Akshat Barve overpowered second seed Kabir Barot 30-25.
