Chembur Gym survive CCI scare, advance to the finals


 

Chembur Gymkhana, powered by a solid performance from Parthiv Nair managed to pull themselves back from a 2-1 deficit to secure a 3-2 victory over the fancied CCI team and advance to the finals of the Kanji Cup in the ongoing Motiram Club (for men), Ullal Cup (women) and Kanji Memorial Cup (for juniors) Inter-Club badminton tournament, organised by Badminton Gurukul and hosted by NSCI at their new badminton courts on Saturday.

In the boy’s U-15 tie, Harshil Doshi of Chembur Gymkhana was up against Soham Pathak of CCI. Harshil fought well but he did not stand a chance against Soham who made him run all around the court eventually securing the first win for his team by taking down Harshil 21-13, 21-16 in straight games. After a great start, CCI suffered an unnecessary setback as they lost their Girls U-15 tie as Taarini Suri could not make it to for the match. Later in the boy’s double’s U-19 match, Soham and Shubham of CCI were stretched thin in the first game by Parthiv Nair and Gaurav Rawal of Chembur Gymkhana. The CCI pair kept their cool to prevail 23-21 and after a rocky start, the pair regrouped and went on to dominate their opponents winning the 2nd and 3rd game 21-14, 21-9 to give CCI a 2-1 lead. Nirali Pokhrana and Myuna Mhatre provided some hope to Chembur when they overpowered Praniti Wadhwa and Dia Parasrampuria of CCI 21-12, 21-11 to level the scores at 2-2. In the final tie, the mixed doubles pair of Parthiv Nair and Prishita Sinha survived the first game loss and fought hard to prevail over Shubham Pal and Pranathi Wadhwa of CCI beating them 17-21, 21-19, 21-12 to help Chembur Gymkhana advance to the finals.

 

In another semi-final tie,  Defending Champions Goregaon Sports Club faced no challenge on their way to a 3-0 rout of NSCI. The pair of Tanshiq Saxena and Harsh Shama ran through Krish Thakur and Diyaan Jain of NSCI to provide a winning start. Later, Aalisha Naik and Harsh Sharma followed up with brilliant performances to take down their opponents in straight games and advance to the finals.
