Bespectacled Varun Majumdar, seeded second behind Gaurav Rege rallied brilliantly to humble the top seed in a thrilling men’s singles final of the Mumbai Suburban District badminton Championships, hosted by Khar Gymkhana at their courts here last night. Losing the first game rather tamely, Varun turned on the heat midway in the second game to take the tie to the wire. More aggressive of the two, lanky Varun grabbed six points in a row from 13-14 to to regain the initiative and ultimately romped home with a 11-21, 21-18,. 21-17 win in a fast-paced title encounter.

It was double delight for favourite lefthander Pooja Devlekar, who fought back from a game down to score over Nakshatra Hanchate, the second seed to take the women’s singles crown with a 16-21, 21-16, 21-10. Later Pooja paired with Siddharth Nageshkar to beat Kairav Thakore and Purav Suryamurthy 21-19, 21-14 in the mixed doubles final.
