Top seeds GM Iturrizaga Bonelli Eduardo and GM Amonatov Farrukh had an easy outing as they breezed past Indians Rishab Chandrasekhar and Tushar Anand in a first-round match of the 12th Mumbai Mayor’s Cup International Chess Tournament 2019 sponsored by Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai and Co-Sponsored by LIC of India and Aditya Birla Group played at Mount Litera School International, Bandra on Sunday.
GM Iturrizaga Bonelli Eduardo chose a traditional approach and started the game with Anglo Indian English opening. Rishabh Gokhale playing with black made a mistake in a 22nd move by playing Rxd4, Eduardo took full advantage of that move and in 36 moves Rishabh Gokhale was forced to resign from the game. In another match, defending champion GM Amonatov Farrukh stared the game with a defensive Sicilian opening. Tushar made a mistake in the 18th move by playing RC2 and Farrukh forced him out of the game in less than 30 moves.
The players in the open international section would be vying for the first prize of Rs 3 Lakhs from a total prize fund of 14 lakhs while the runners up will get 2.3 and 1.25 Lakhs respectively. Mayor’s Chess is a 10-round tournament with a classical time-control of 60 minutes + 30 seconds increment from move 1. In addition, the players also stand a chance to earn the GM/IM norm
