Catholic Gym Rink Football
Enterprising strikers Crystal Blakely and Anoushka Thakkar struck a brace of goals each which enabled Joga Invincibles stave off a spirited challenge from a young Athlon FC, Mulund by scripting a 7-4 win in a high-scoring Women Open quarter-final match of the Catholic Gymkhana Rink Football Tournament 2019, played under floodlights at the Catholic Gymkhana’s artificial turf, Marine Drive on Tuesday evening. The tournament is being conducted under the auspices of the MDFA.
Crystal and Anoushka showed good understanding and combined well with their teammates as they fired in four of the seven goals. Rachel D’Mello, Neha Ture and Levenah Samuel chipped in with one each for Joga Invincibles. Leading Athlon’s fight back was Asha Joshi who scored three goals and Urva Mehta who got one.
In Veteran Men’s quarter-final action, Shalom United got the better of Mumbai Customs by a clear 2-0 margin. Joginder Thapa and Vijay Anand netted a goal each to secure Shalom United’s victory and a place in the semi-finals.
Earlier in another match, Vakola Veterans scored an impressive 3-0 win against N.F.C. Malad. Dennis D’Souza scored two goals and Richard Noronha netted one for the losers.
Meanwhile, in Men’s Open competition, defending champions Autonomous SC tamed Glorian FC 2-0 with Declan Gonsalves and Bhavesh Kurlekar scoring a goal each for the winners.
Later in the evening, Bombastic FC rode on Roger Sam’s double strikes blanked Macabi Dadar 3-0. Franco Salin netted Bombastic’s the third goal.
