Opportunistic goal-scorer Rijuta Mullick capitalized on the chances that came her way to score two goals in leading Bombay Republicans to a facile 3-0 win against Hockey Troupe SC in Women’s first round match of the Willingdon Catholic Gymkhana’s 38th Victor D’Mello Memorial Invitational Rink Hockey Tournament 2019, organized under the auspices of the MHAL, and played at the Gymkhana’s floodlit tennis courts late Tuesday evening.
Bombay Republicans dominated play from the start and scored the crucial goals to come through. Rijuta’s striker partner Chaitrali Gawade scored the third goal to seal Republicans win and a passage to the semi-finals.
In another match, Freunds Blue got the better of F-United Sporting Lions by a narrow 4-3 margin. Freunds combined nicely and scored through the efforts of Ruqqaiya Shaikh, Vishakha Dhuri, Resham Mahadik and Madhavi Patil, all scoring a goal each. F-United scored through Nimmy Nair, Mamta Pasi and Jemina Monteiro.
Meanwhile, Bombay Republicans men’s outfit continued with their impressive showing to record their second win on the trot and advanced to the semi-final. In a closely fought quarter-final match, Republicans defeated Mumbai Customs 5-3 via the penalty strokes tie-breaker after full-time finished at 2-2. Moses Pulanthara and consistent scorer Venkatesh Devkar, both scored a brace of goals each while Bhim Batala got one to complete Republicans win, while Dharambir Yadav, Jayesh Jadhav and Hement Gethe were on target with a goal apiece for Customs.
Earlier, in a Veterans Men’s encounter, Hockey Dadar dished out a dazzling performance and storm past Sunday Sultans coasting to a 4-1 win. Niren Pimenta, Oswald D’Souza, Gavin Vandrine and Prasad Shetty coordinated perfectly to score a goal each to complete the margin of victory while Sunday Sultans score one through Chou Chang.
