Sushanth Shetty of Mumbai Suburban District put in a determined effort and managed to overcome Pune District’s Sarang Vyas in three tough games, pulling off a 21-10, 18-21, 21-16 victory to march into the quarter-finals of the men’s singles (35+) event in the Maharashtra Badminton Association Senior State Veteran’s Championship – 2018 organised and co-hosted by Badminton 45 and Bombay Gymkhana and played at the gymkhana’s badminton courts on Friday.
In another keenly contested encounter, Apoorva Javadekar of Pune showed strong fighting qualities as he recovered from the loss of the first game and bounced back to the win the next two to defeat Rustam Warden of Greater Mumbai by a close 16-21, 21-15, 21-14 win to advance to the quarter-finals.
Meanwhile, the top seed Aditya Pandya of Mumbai Suburban easily defeated Sarvesh Agrawal of Amravati 21-7, 21-5 and Nashik’s second seed Abhishek Patil outplayed city mate Yogesh Dusanee 21-3, 21-6 to also progress to the quarter-finals.
In women’s action, Shikha Lamb of Greater Mumbai tamed Pranali Vid of Mumbai Suburban 21-3, 21-15 in a first round encounter and will meet top seed Palkan Dave of Mumbai Suburban in the quarters.
Pune’s Aditi Rode also booked a place in the last eight round after defeating Sushmita Dutta of Mumbai Suburban 21-14, 21-9. Rode will take on second seed Linta Mathew of Mumbai Suburban in the last eight round.
