Vijay,Urwashi Squash champs


 

Tamil Nadu’s Vijay Kumar, after toppling topseed   Ranjit Singh in the semifinal, maintained his momentum to pack off the second seed  Jamal Sakib 11-4, 11-5, 11-6  with a commanding display of power and guile to clinch the men’s final in the  7th JSW-All India  Sunil Verma Memorial Squash Championship held in the JSW Squash Academy, at Vasind (Thane)  today. For the Tamil stalwart, it was perhaps his best performance, as he outplayed most of his rivals and that too without dropping any game.

As for the hosts, apart from Urwashi Joshi winning the women’s crown, their juniors – both  boys and girls – cantered away with most of the finals. Their boys under-19 top seed Rahul Baitha defeated his JSW Academy mate Suraj Chand (11-9, 11-8, 11-7)   and  under-17 top seed Deepak Mandal  produced his best,while quelling the challenge of Tamil Nadu’s  Kishore Arvind 9-11, 12-10,  11-8,  5-11.  11-8. However, Om Sernwal  had to settle for the runners-up prize in the boys under-15 final, losing to  Rutva Sawant, also from Maharashtra.

 

The, Delhi’s sisters, Amira Singh, the under 17 top seed, and her younger sister Anahat, the under-11 top seed, proved to be the cut above the rest, while winning their respective finals in straight games. In the only final that did not figure a player from Maharashtra was the girls under-15 contest, which was won by MP’s top seed Aasya Patel, who dropped a  game before scoring over Tamil Nadu’s Pooja Arthi R 11-8,  8-11, 11-9, 12-10 for the coveted title.
