Thane’s men’s top seed Sanish Ambekar outplayed his district-mate Zubin Taraporwala in straight games (11-6, 11-3, 11-6, 11-4) to bag the nen’s singles title in the the first Maharashtra State ranking tabled tennis championships, held at Nanded last night. However, Sanish was halted in his bid for a double by Mumbai City’s bespectacled Shubham Ambre, who beat him 11-8, 11-7, 13-11, 11-9 in the youth boys title round.

Mumbai Suburbs’ Shrusti Haleangadi, top seeded in youth girls and Shaurya Pednekar, the top seed in the junior boys, bagged their respective singles titles. Shrusti triumphed 13-11, 5-11, 6-11, 12-10, 11-5, 11-7, while Shaurya thrashed Thane’s Deepak Patil 11-2, 11-9, 11-6, 11-5. Another Mumbai Suburb player Aditi Sinha, who had knocked out junior girls top seed Shrusti Haleangadi in the quarterfinals, put up a fine show, before going down to Raigad’s Swastika Ghosh in four games.
