Pune’s Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex at Balewadi witnessed good competition in National Veterans’ Table Tennis Championship during the past week . Mangala Saraf playing in the Women’s 60+ group proved her supremacy , as she went on to win her 8th Gold medal at nationals. She had earlier won 7 gold medals in 40+ Women’s group. Mangal has been playing table tennis for the past 40 years, for Maharashtra.
Another veteran Deepak Dudhane stole the show in men’s 65+ group. Playing in the Men’s 65+ group for the first time, Deepak knocked out former international Suhas Kulkarni in the quarter finals, in a five set thriller and later went on to defeat Satish Kulkarni in the finals to claim his Gold medal.
Evergreen Prakash kelkar stopped the winning run of Jagannath Mohite in the finals of Men’s 60+ section. Losing the first game to Jagannath, Prakash fought back to win the next three games, to bag his third Gold medal. Prakash had earlier won gold in men’s 60+ team event followed by 2nd Gold in the mixed doubles event, partnering Sunanda Rao also from Maharashtra.
Vivek Alwani did not face much resistance from K.K.Rai also from Maharashtra and beat his stylish opponent in three straight games. K.K. Rai had toppled former international and Maharashtra top player in 49+ section Sunil Babras in semi finals.
Maharashtra players also proved their dominance in doubles event, as Neeta Kulkarni partnering Dr. Anagha kale bagged the Gold in the Women’s 49+ doubles event. Anagha also bagged her second Gold, when she won the mixed doubles 49+ event, partnering Sunil Babras. Sunil also bagged two gold medals in doubles, the second in 49+ men’s doubles combining with Vivek Alwani, who also won two Golds.
Six more pairs from Maharashtra, Debdoot Chatterjee and Rohit Choudhary ( Men’s Doubles 39+), Upendra Joshi and Shilpa Joshi ( Mixed Doubles 39+), Sunil babras & Vivek Alwani( Men’s Doubles 50+), Jayant Kulkarni & Percy Mehta( Men’s Doubles 60+) and Nandini Kulkarni & Mangala Saraf ( Womens 60+ doubles), Pinakin Sampat and Manisha Bodas (64+), Pinakin Sampat also bagged Gold in their respective sections.
