Lady Ratanbai & Sir Mathuradas Vissanji Academy ended at the top of the school ranking table to be crowned as the Champions of Sports For All 2016, at the DY Patil Stadium, Nerul today.
The 22 day-long sporting extravaganza for inter-school sports which started on November 28 and culminated today saw Vissanji Academy win 20 gold medals, 18 silver and 21 bronze medal and amass a total of 196 points to edge out a strong challenge from Vibgyor High School, Goregaon and Jamnabai Narsee School, who finished second and third respectively on the points table.
Each gold medal carried five points, while silver and bronze added for three and two points respectively on the points tally.
Vissanji Academy, who fielded a strong contingent of 321 kids including 189 boys and 132 girls and participated in 15 different sporting category were not even in contention till the 19th day of the championship and it looked like Vibgyor would walk out as the champions. However, their performance in the combat sport on day 20th and 21st, where they collected a total of 42 medals helped them edge past their competitors.
Vibgyor accumulated a total of 180 points to finish as the runner-up of the championship. The Goregaon School even though they finished with more number of gold medals (21); they lost out the battle due as they ended with lesser silver (13) and bronze (18).
Jamnabai ended the championship with 13 gold medals, 16 silver medals and 18 bronze medals to take the third position on the points table with a total of 149.
Fr. Agnel Multipurpose School and Junior College (Vashi) finished with a total of 122 points (12 gold, 13 silver and 14 bronze) to take the fourth place, while Children’s Academy, Malad took the fifth spot with a total of 122 points (14 gold, 10 silver and 11 bronze).
As has been the story so far, the final day of SFA was also was an exhilarating one, with top spot up for grabs in the different sporting categories including kabbadi, football, volleyball, water polo and handball.
In football Under-16 boys’ football State Bank Officers Association Public School beat Udayachal High School 3-1 to win the title, while the Under-16 title girls’ title went to St. Augustine High School who beat Ryan International School, Kharghar 5-1.Reliance Foundation School (Koparkhairane) continued their impressive run to beat Ryan International School (Kharghar) 3-0 to take the crown in the Under-14 boys’ category. The Under-14 girls’ title went to Billabong High International School (Thane) who beat Udayachal High School 2-0.
N.M Joshi Marg Municipal Secondary School, Currey Road beat R.F Naik Vidyalaya and Jr. College by 14 points to win the gold medal in the boys’ Under-17 kabbadi championship. In the boys’ Under-14 finals, Dynan Pushpa Vidya Niketan & Junior College beat N.M Joshi Marg Municipal Secondary School, Currey Road by 13 points to walk away with the top prize.
In girls’ Under-12 volleyball competition, St. Lawrence High School beat Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Vidyalaya 25-12, 25-17 to win the gold medal and in the third place match Balbharti Public School beat Amrita Vidyalaya by 25-12, 25-12
In handball category boys’ Under-16 final saw I.E.S Charkop beat Gopi Birla Memorial School 7-4 to win in the gold medal, while Utpal Sanghvi Global School beat Apeejay Kharghar 6-5 to take the gold.
In the Basketball Under-16 category saw Pantnagar Municipal U.P Hindi School No.3 beat Gurukul Educational Institution 43-33. In the third place match Jamnabai Narsee International School beat D.A.V, Nerul by 11-09
In water polo boys’ under-18 final St. Xavier’s High School, Airoliwon gold, Janki Devi Public School, Andheri took the silver and Ryan International School, Kharghar settled for the bronze. In the girls’ under-18 final St. Xavier’s High School, Airoli won gold and Ryan International School, Kharghar settled for the silver.
