Sports For All kick-started their 2016 event with a bang amidst much fanfare and excitement from the participants at the Sports Authority of India, Kandivalli here today.
In the opening event of the day, the 3000 meters race it was the 17 year old Rahul Yadav of Jindal Vidya Mandir who stole the limelight in the under-18 category. The 17 year old district champion in 5000 meters from Thane lived up to his reputation and clocked an impressive time of 10:08 minutes to outrun his closest rivals Rinaldi Pereira and Mohit Aryaman. Rinaldi of St. Arnold High School finished with a time of 11:21 minutes to win the silver medal, while Mohit took 14:26 minutes to cross the finish line and settle for the bronze medal.
In the girls 3000 metres in the under-16 classification, Ashwini More of Rajshri Chattrapari Shahu Maharaj Vidayala took the top honours by finishing with a total time of 11.55 minutes and was trailed by Mary Immaculate Girls High School duo of Ashwini Prabhakar and Sakshi Shanbagh to the second and third position respectively. Ashwini registered a total time of 11.55 minutes, while Sakshi clocked 12:42 minutes to complete her 15 laps. Ashwini is incidentally a state level kho kho player and will also represent her school in the kho kho tournament.
In the boys under-18 long jump category, Hrithik Joshi of DAV Public School jumped the highest to win the gold medal. Joshi crossed the mark of 6.16 metres to out jump his opponents. Prakash Gawkhadkar of Udayachal High School touched the mark of 5.6 metres to win the silver, while Dhanush Bhadreshwara of Gurukul Educational Institution jumped 5.59 to finish third.
The multi-discipline school sports tournament which will be played over three-week will see students compete in 25 disciplines and began their campaign with athletics. The discipline will have whopping 5120 students compete for the ultimate glory over the course of three days.
The tournament has already received around 30,000 registrations from 656 schools including 65 BMC schools and the number in all likelihood will go up with sports like archery, fencing, judo, hockey, kho kho, kabaddi and swimming are still open for registration.
