Seasoned midfielder Vijith Shetty played an inspirational role and came up with two assists which resulted in goals that helped Air India snatch a deserving 2-0 win against Mumbai Customs in an Elite Division match of the MDFA (Mumbai District Football Association) League 2016-2017, and played at the Cooperage ground on Wednesday evening. Anurag Sidhu headed home the first goal in the 71st minute and Sunny Thakur scored the second in the very next minute.
The clash between former champions Air India and Mumbai Customs was far from exciting and there was not many goal scoring opportunities at the either end, especially in the first half which finished in a goalless stalemate.
Air India were better equipped and after a couple of attempts finally managed to get the breakthrough when Vijith from a free-kick did well to chip over the rival defence for Sidhu who leapt high and firmly headed past Lihaz Koya under the Customs bar in the 71st minute.
A minute later, Air India doubled the lead when Vijith with another fine effort put Thakur in the clear and the later did well to control the ball before slotting past the hapless Koya to seal the airmen’s win.
Referee Crystal John showed the yellow cards to Indrajit Chougle, Mrunal Tandel and Shravan Shetty of Air India and Hekmat Singh and Sagar K of Mumbai Customs.
On Thursday, Maharashtra State Police vs Western Railway at 1.30 pm.
