Thakur junior College sprang a surprise when they downed home favourite St. Francis D’Assisi 3-1 in the furiously fought under-19 final of the DSO’s (Divisional Sports Office)’s District level Football tournament, organised and sponsored by Vision Sports Reconnect and Fairplay Sports Management at St. Francis D’Assisi ground, Borivali, here today.
The under-19 champions Thakur college all elated after beating fancied St. Francis D’Assisi 3-0 in the final of the DSO’s District level Football tournament .
With almost 1000 boys and girls (college mates) encouraging them, St. Francis boys were expected to call the shots. But ironically it turned out the presence of goodly crowd of home team supporters brought the best in Thakur boys, particularly in the second half, in which they dominated the exchanges. They, however, missed atleast three clear chances of scoring, as their forwards either hit over the cross-bar, or were thwarted by St. Francis goalkeeper Vijay Saleth. However, during the tie-breaker Thakur goalie Jay Suryavanshi was at his very best and not once he allowed to ball the pass him, while the Thakur boys found the target thrice to emerge winners.
The day turned out to be quite depressing one for the St. Francis teams, as their under-17 team too was beaten by St. Lawrence (Borivli) 3-1 via the tie-breaker for the third place. Favourite Stanislaus Jr College, however,did face tough time against the spirited display of Lilavati Podar (Santacruz), who held them to goalless before the tie-breaker saw the Bandra outfit prevailing 3-1.
