17-year-old International Master Visakh N R scored an upset win over GM Amonatov Farrukh in a marathon 5-hour match to join overnight leader GM Diptayan Ghosh at the top of the leader board at the end of the 9th round of Mumbai Mayor International Open Chess Tournament 2016, presented by Zee Learn Ltd and co-sponsored by LIC and Ankit Gems, at Mount Litera School International, BKC.
The game between GM Diptayan Ghosh and GM Grachev Boris, which started in the Sicilian defense ended in an early draw with just 27 moves on the board, as both the players played safe avoiding any risks.
On the 3rd board, GM Gleizerov Evgeny, played against Himal Gusain had a narrow escape in the Queen’s Gambit Declined variation. Himal maintained pressure on the king side of Evgeny from the 10th move but failed to convert it as the moves repeated on the board and he had to settle for a draw.
R R Laxman and Swapnil Dhopade also played out and both to plasce themselves in joint third place with 6.5 points.
The game between GM Amonatov Farrukh and IM Visakh N R, which started in King’s Indian defense lasted for 5 hours with a result in favour of Visakh. Visakh was having a good position with a knight for a rook. With regular exchange of pieces he got an opposite colour bishop ending, with 2 extra pawns. With an unstoppable passed pawn Farrukh had no choice but to accept his defeat in 57 moves.
