Candidate Master Aditya Mittal led the brigade of young Indian chess players, who impressed with mature performances on the second day of the In the 9th edition of Mumbai Mayor International Open Chess Tournament 2016, Presenting partner Zee Learn Ltd and Co-sponsored by LIC and Ankit Gems, at Mount Litera School International, Bandra- IB* school in BKC, Mumbai, here, on Friday.
While Aditya scored a stunning win over IM Vikramaditya Kulkarni, Mumbai lad Bhavic Bharambe, Ajay Krishna and Ojas Kulkarni all recorded creditable draws against their GM opponents.
Candidate Master Aditya Mittal stunned everyone including his opponent IM Vikramaditya Kulkarni (ELO 2278). Vikramaditya replied with an unusual opening to Aditya’s queen pawn move and on the 20th move Aditya gained the center pawn with attack on the bishop. Aditya won a rook for the bishop on the 36th move and won the game in 66 moves
The 6th seed Mozharov Mikhail of Russia (ELO 2560) was held for a draw by Ajay Krishna (ELO 2133) of Tamil Nadu. On the 25th move Ajay had a chance to gain a decisive advantage but failed by moving a wrong piece. With nothing much to play on the board both agreed for a draw after 35 moves.
In another encounter Mumbai’s Bhavic Bharambe (ELO 2130), playing with White against Grandmaster Ulybin Mikhail (2520) of Russia opted for a queen pawn opening. Both the players were playing head to head till 28 moves. On the 29th move, with an exchange of bishops, Bhavik managed to win a center pawn, but with the rook endgames on the boards he failed to convert it to a win against the experience of Ulybin, settling for a draw in 47 moves.
Ojas Kulkarni (ELO2000) of Karnatak, who held GM Sandipan Chanda yesterday was in a good form by holding another GM Shardul Gagare (ELO 2506) to a draw.
