Goa dished out a strong resolute display to overcome a fighting Assam 1-0 in a Group-B league match of the 70thNational Football Championship for the Santosh Trophy, conducted by WIFA under the auspices of AIFF, hosted by NDFA and played at the University Stadium, Nagpur, on Thursday.
The former champs, Goa, took the lead through Robinson Rodrigues in the 16th minute and thereafter beat back the challenge from Assam to come out winners. This was the second win for Goa who had earlier defeated West Bengal 3-1.
In the other group match played at the SEC Railway Stadium, West Bengal struck at the death to get the better of Punjab by an identical 1-0 margin. Prosenjit Paul netted the crucial winning goal in the 90th minute to complete Bengal’s first win in the group.
