Cricket legend Martin Crowe is no more


Former New Zealand Cricket team captain Martin David Crowe, passed away today, after fighting with cancer. He was 53. Martin was diagnosed with lymphoma in 2012, but was declared cancer-free, the following year. However, the disease reoccurred again in 2014.

After retiring from active cricket, Crowe remained involved with the game of cricket as a writer and commentator. He was a Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1985, and was credited as one of the   A right-handed batsman, Crowe represented New Zealand from the early 1980s until his retirement in 1996.

 

Through the early part of his career he was also a medium-pace bowler. He captained New Zealand in the early 1990s, and during this period he brought many innovations, such as opening with spin bowlers and utilising pinch hitting batsmen. Crowe played 77 tests and 143 one day internationals, in his career which spanned over 13 years. He scored 17 centuries, with 5444 test runs scored at an average of 54.36.

Crowe is survived by his wife Lorraine Downes and two step sons.
