Nagpur’s Malvika Bansod, ranked no. 2 in the country in her age group , sizzled as she toppled top seeded Kalpita Sawant of Mumbai 10-21, 21-18, 21-16 in a nailing-biting under-17 finals of the PNB Metlife West Zone junior badminton championships held at Goregaon Sports Club here today.
However, the hard-working lefthander was distinctly lucky against graceful storkeplayer Aarya Deshpande from Satara in the girls under-15 final. It was the toughest tie of the day with fortunes swayed from time to time before Malvika prevailed at 18-21, 21-18, 22-20. Aarya, ranked India No.7 in the under-13 age group, did have the consolation of winning the girls under-13 crown when in another gruelling final against Mumbai’s Tasnim Mir, she won 21-13, 20-22, 21-16 .
But, in the boys singles under-17 final, the top seeded Mumbai’s Deep Rambhia proved just too good for Digvijaysinh Kushwaha to clinch the tie 21-13, 21-15. And so was top seeded Tanishaq Saxena, who won the under-13 title with a 21=-15, 21-15 win over Ameya Khond.
