Rohinton,Nandu bag double gold


Mumbai’s Rohinton Mehta, a late starter in athletics (he was 37, when he took to running), did commendably well as won the 400m hurdles as well as 800m in the men’s plus 35-55 category in the Maharashtrs State Masters Athletics’ Championships, held at the University Stadium here today. Maintaing a steady pace, Rohinton left the field way behind to win the event in 1:12.1 secs.

Nandu Ugale from Nashik, too, scored a double, winning the 800m (2:24.5 secs.) as well as 10000m (47:03.2 secs) in th men’s plus 40 section..

Mary Rodrigues, now 81, who was the oldest athlete in this Masters meet, made her presence felt by winning the 100m run in the women’s plus 70 category Mary has been an international athlete for nearly three decades, having participated in Hong Kong, Jakarta, Singapore and Finland meets and won medals in the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m as well as long jump and 5000km walks at various stages in her long athletic career.
