Mumbai’s Aryan Goveas came up with a solid all-round performance to outplay Tejas Chaukalkar in three sets and lift the men’s singles title in the Rs 5 lakh AITA All-India Ranking Pune Open Tennis Tournament at the Deccan Gymkhana on Saturday.
Goveas thus completed a creditable double adding to the doubles title he won on Friday. The 17-year-old Goveas, a student of Rizvi College, Bandra, won the two-hour contest 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 to take home the winner’s purse of Rs 35,100 and bagged 60 AITA points.
With both players striking an early rhythm, games went with serves till 3-all in the first sent before Goveas broke Chakulkar. The lone break was enough for Goveas to then serve out the set 6-4.
Chaukulkar hit back in the second, breaking Goveas in the second game and then holding for a 3-0 lead. With both players hitting big from the baseline, the rallies were long and tested the physical limits of the players.
Goveas broke back in the fifth game to inch close at 2-3, but Chaukulkar kept up the momentum and the pressure on his rival’s serve, breaking Goveas to win the second set 6-4.
The third set saw Goveas taking control early. With his powerful forehand winners, he broke Chaukulkar in the first and fifth games for a commanding 4-1 lead before serving out the match at 6-2 to claim his second AITA men’s singles title.
